Modern printers are so much more these days. Most of them are All-In-One devices which print, scan, copy, and fax. They might even do your laundry if you ask them nicely! Some of the newer printers also have wireless connections so you can print wirelessly from your laptop or other wireless devices such as a phone or tablet computer.
Common Misconceptions
Wireless Printers should really be called Network Printers because they must connect to your network before you can print to them from a wireless device. Most people seem to believe that you can print to a wireless printer directly or wirelessly from your laptop or device right through the air. While some printers do have the ability to do this via Bluetooth, most of the printers that say they are wireless use WiFi, which means you must have a wireless router installed in your home or office for this work.
How It Works
The printer must be connected to your router before any wireless device can print to it. You can connect the printer to the router using a network cable (Ethernet) or via WiFi just like a laptop connects to your router for internet access. Once the printer is connected to the router either by cable or WiFi, then any computer or device that connects to the internet through your router will also be able to print to that printer. If you were using your laptop and it connects to your router wirelessly via WiFi, then when you print to it, that would be considered wireless printing. This is because you are able to print to that “Network” printer without having to connect a USB cable to the laptop.
